We are very excited to welcome BioReference Laboratories to Rupa Health! We had a great conversation with the team at BioReference Laboratories to learn more about them, their tests, and their partnership with Rupa Health.
Introducing BioReference Laboratories!
Tell us about BioReference Laboratories and how Rupa Health works with them?
BioReference Laboratories, Inc. is one of the largest full-service specialty laboratories in the US that gives healthcare providers and patients the power to make confident healthcare decisions. We offer comprehensive test solutions and unparalleled expertise based on a 40-year legacy of proven laboratory expertise. We serve approximately 21 million patients annually, operate a network of 11 laboratory locations, and BioReference is backed by a medical staff of more than 300 M.D., D.O., Ph.D., genetic counselors and other professional clinical and scientific personnel.
Combined with our national footprint and niche market experience, we provide modern diagnostic solutions that support the needs of employers, governmental agencies, educational systems, hospitals and health systems, correctional institutions, sports leagues, travel and leisure industries, and retail markets.
With Scarlet Health®, our latest innovation, BioReference has reimagined the delivery of laboratory diagnostics through its integrated digital platform – addressing the complexity of healthcare in today’s digital age. Scarlet is an on-demand, on-location laboratory specimen collection solution that enables a fully virtual telehealth experience for patients – any patient that is in need of laboratory testing, including safe and convenient COVID-19 testing.
Given BioReference is one of the largest full-service specialty laboratories in the US, what can you tell us about most ordered testing panels and how they are used to support patients?
Our most commonly ordered laboratory panels ordered by healthcare providers include Comprehensive Metabolic, CBC, Lipid Screen, Hemoglobin A1c, and TSH panels. Physicians ordering common laboratory panels such as Comprehensive Metabolic, CBC, Lipid Screen, Hemoglobin A1c, and TSH panels are determining the status of a variety of conditions. The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel is used for determining the status of kidneys, liver, electrolytes, acid/base balance and blood sugar and protein levels. The CBC Panel offers a broad assessment of the white blood cell count with differential, red cell counts and indices, as well as the platelet count. Lipid Screen (Basic Lipid Profile) Panel can measure serum cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) levels. Hemoglobin A1c is used for diabetic monitoring. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Panel assess the thyroid function and it is most commonly used as a screening test for hypothyroidism.
Scarlet®, our mobile specimen collection service, offers an expansive menu of more than 1,500 laboratory tests. Access to convenient laboratory testing gives patients more control over their healthcare and up-to-date testing is a factor in improving health outcomes. 70 percent of medical decisions are based on lab test results, yet 30 percent of patients never have their lab tests performed – revealing a wide gap in care.
Scarlet helps close this gap in care by creating a new point of access to laboratory testing – all from the comfort of their home. If patients are immunocompromised, face transportation barriers, physical challenges, require regular testing as part of chronic disease management or prescription drug management, or simply prefer a more convenient alternative to traditional laboratory testing, Scarlet is a great service for them.
What we see as critically important in terms of delivering on greater access to care is that more than half of our patients schedule their Scarlet appointment the same day they receive their scheduling link and nearly 75 percent of patients scheduled their appointment by the end of the next day after receiving their link. When we’re thinking about the fact that 70 percent of medical decisions are based on lab results, our central mission with Scarlet is to make sure that patients have convenient access to healthcare information that can help improve their health outcomes – with Rupa, we’re able to expand access to more patients.
Is there anything else we should know about BioReference’s work with Rupa Health?
BioReference and Scarlet work to create customizable solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing medical systems and provider workflows. In our work with Rupa, we are making laboratory diagnostics easy to access for both patients and providers. Together, BioReference and Rupa remove friction and streamline the diagnostic experience. This is done in part by offering the largest test compendium of all labs currently featured on Rupa’s platform. This unique aspect gives providers the largest selection of labs for their patients.
