Rupa: Thank you for joining us, Dr Gschwend! We’d love to know more about you and your practice. Can you tell us more about what you do as a practitioner?
Dr. Gschwend: Sure! I’m a chiropractor by training, but I am very passionate about the functional medicine space as a whole. I blend my understanding of the human mind, body, and energy to help my patients’ unlock their potential for true health & well-being. I use a variety of disciplines in my work including functional neurology/neurological rehabilitation, psychoneuroimmunology, cognitive psychology, functional medicine/clinical nutrition, and bioenergetic medicine. I use specialty testing to make sure my patients are informed about their health, and so I can provide the best quality of care for them.
Rupa: What were you doing before you started using Rupa, and what were the problems?
Dr. Gschwend: Previously, I would have to order lab tests directly from many different lab companies - and let me tell you - their portal interfaces are not always the friendliest. And, when you’re working from 7am to 7pm and your schedule is stacked, there’s not a lot of time to learn how to use several different systems.
I have “member advocates” on staff who are responsible for making sure that patients are satisfied with my service and their needs are being met. Sometimes, I would train them on how to order the tests themselves, but it would take me hours. So, a lot of the time, I ordered the tests myself. But, I may only have 2-3 minutes between patients, and I don’t want to spend it worrying about lab tests
Additionally, some labs would require me to keep lab kits in my office. And, sometimes they expire before we hand them out, so that’s a waste.
Rupa: That sounds like a logistical nightmare. Since you started using Rupa, what are some of the benefits you’ve seen?
Dr. Gschwend: Using Rupa is so simple, and it saves me so much time. I can now pass this task off to my staff without worrying about how much time it takes them, or if they’re having trouble using all the different portals. We now have one easy place to go for everything.
All my “member advocate” has to do is type the name and e-mail of the patient, click on the test, and she’s done. It seems like such a small thing to do it this way, but it makes a huge difference in flow throughout the day.
Rupa: And what does that do for your “member advocates”?
Dr. Gschwend: It keeps my staff focused on patient engagement & follow-up, rather than on unnecessary admin work. We want our patients to have the best experience possible, and that’s why I hire member advocates. The more time they have to focus on my patients and their experience before & after a visit - the better it is for me and my patients.
And, on a personal note, it allows me to catch up on other really important responsibilities that I have. The time savings really adds up.
Rupa: What about your patients? How are they receiving benefits from Rupa?
Dr. Gschwend: With Rupa, I’m providing an extra level of service for my patients. It increases the value of care I can provide because it improves my efficiency. I can spend more time with patients versus worrying about labwork. But, as I used it more, I realized there were even more benefits.
At first, I thought Rupa was all about saving me time. But, as I learned more about the culture of Rupa and the e-mails patients receive from Rupa, I realized that my vision & mission for my patients and Rupa’s vision & mission are one in the same. I also love how transparent the pricing is. I want to be transparent with my patients around cost, and Rupa makes it so easy to relay the actual cost of the lab to the patient, so they know exactly what they’re getting and what it costs.
Rupa: Anything else you can tell us about the problems Rupa is helping you solve?
Dr. Gschwend: What’s funny is that I didn’t even realize this was a problem until I found out about Rupa. But, unconsciously, I feel like I wasn’t ordering as many labs as I could have because of all the administrative hassles that it used to come with. But, now with Rupa, I don’t have to worry about that. I can just order all the labs the patient needs so they get the most relevant data for their health.
