% Small Dense LDL

What's
% sdLDL
?
The percentage of Small Dense LDL (% sdLDL) refers to the proportion of a specific type of "bad cholesterol" in your body. Small Dense LDL (sdLDL) particles are tinier and more compact than regular LDL particles. These little particles can easily enter the walls of your arteries, making them a significant concern for heart health. The % sdLDL measurement provides a more detailed look at your cholesterol levels, going beyond the standard assessments of total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.
If Your Levels Are High
Having a higher than normal percentage of small, dense LDL particles in your blood might be due to various factors, such as eating too many refined carbs and unhealthy fats, not getting enough exercise, or having certain genes. Some medications, like beta-blockers, thiazide diuretics, and certain hormone therapies, could also raise your levels of these tiny cholesterol particles. Conditions like metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance might be linked to increased small, dense LDL levels as well.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of % sdLDL may not be immediately noticeable, as this condition often presents without overt signs. However, over time, it could contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, which may manifest as chest pain, shortness of breath, or other heart-related symptoms.
If Your Levels are Low
A low % sdLDL level means that a smaller portion of your "bad cholesterol" is made up of those tiny, dense particles that can easily get stuck in your arteries and cause problems for your heart. This might be because you're eating a diet that's low in unhealthy fats and high in fiber, getting regular exercise, and keeping your weight in check. Some medications, like statins, can also help lower these levels. However, having a low % sdLDL doesn't mean you're completely safe from heart issues, as other factors like high blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes can still put you at risk.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of % sdLDL are typically not noticeable, as this is a measure of cholesterol type rather than an illness or condition with physical manifestations.
