Amylase Test - This test measures the levels of amylase, an enzyme mainly produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. This can aid in diagnosing inflammatory conditions such as acute pancreatitis. Serum amylase levels typically rise within 6-24 hours of pancreatic inflammation, peaking for several days, and then normalizing within 3-7 days. Elevated amylase can also result from salivary gland inflammation (such as mumps), biliary tract disease, bowel obstruction, or medications like morphine that affect pancreatic duct sphincter function.
