Serum amylase levels typically rise within 6-24 hours of pancreatic inflammation, peaking for several days, and then normalizing within 3-7 days. Elevated amylase can also result from salivary gland inflammation (such as mumps), biliary tract disease, bowel obstruction, or medications like morphine that affect pancreatic duct sphincter function.
