What's
Enteroinvasive E. coli/Shigella
?
Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli [E. coli] (EIEC) and Shigella are bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal infections, including diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Severe infections can result in bloody diarrhea and dehydration, and may cause kidney issues. These organisms typically enter the body through contaminated food or water, with certain people more at risk for serious complications including those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, young children, and older adults.
