About the Test

Ordering the 184 IgA Food Sensitivity Panel - SERUM with Alletess Medical Laboratory

The 184 IgA Food Sensitivity Panel measures the IgA response to 184 commonly consumed foods.

Food sensitivities may arise anytime throughout one’s life. They may result from repetitive consumption, lack of diversity in the diet, emotional or physical stress, reduced oral tolerance, chronic infection such as, Candida albicans, Epstein-Barr virus, or Lyme’s disease, or due to increased intestinal permeability.

Being that food sensitivity reactions are delayed; it is more difficult to pinpoint what specific food is the cause of the clinical complaint. Testing aids in the identification of these problematic foods. Clinical complaints related to food sensitivities range from mild bloating to severe behavior problems.

Serum IgA is a unique biomarker, and important to assess for intestinal-related issues, such as foods, gut pathogens and ingested chemicals. The gastrointestinal tract is lined with a mucosal layer, home to Secretory IgA (SIgA), the predominant immunoglobulin in the mucosa. When SIgA become overwhelmed, and feels it is losing the battle against an antigen, it transports across the intestinal barrier and becomes serum IgA. In circulation this polymeric IgA stimulates the production of additional serum IgA to help fight the antigen that is about to cross the intestinal barrier. This switching is by-directional. If serum IgA feels overwhelmed by a gut-related antigen, it can cross into the intestinal mucosa and become SIgA, thereby stimulating more SIgA. The extra SIgA is meant to curb the problem in the gut and thus, reduce the fight occurring in circulation.

Serum IgA against food may indicate a more recent onset problem, or a reactivating problem.

Which Patients is the 184 IgA Food Sensitivity Panel best used for?

The root cause of a variety of health problems often stems from the foods we are consuming every day. These can also include foods that are considered healthy. Identifying these foods is a key step to symptom improvement.

The 184 IgA Food Sensitivity Panel should be considered when patients present the following symptoms or conditions:

  • Headache
  • Attention disorders
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Skin disorders: eczema, hives, acne, psoriasis
  • Stomachache
  • Bloating
  • Acid reflux
